Origins of Roulette

Roulette’s roots can be traced back to Blaise Pascal, the brilliant French mathematician and philosopher. In the mid-1600s, Pascal was fascinated with the idea of perpetual motion. In his experiments, he designed a primitive wheel mechanism, not for gambling, but for science.

Though his perpetual motion quest failed, the wheel’s mechanics laid the foundation for what would become roulette. Over the following decades, various gambling games in Europe incorporated spinning wheels, merging chance, mathematics, and spectacle.

By the early 18th century in Paris, a recognisable version of roulette had emerged. Players gathered in aristocratic salons to bet on red or black, odd or even, and numbers on the wheel. The original French wheel had both a single zero and a double zero, making the house edge steeper than today’s European version.

Roulette quickly became the darling of French high society, so much so that when gambling was banned in France, it was forced underground, only adding to its allure.

Throughout the 18th century, roulette continued to refine itself in France. The layout we recognise today, with its green zero, red and black alternating pockets, and betting options, became standardised in this period.

But it wasn’t just the mechanics that captured imaginations. Roulette was ideally suited to the French taste for glamour, suspense, and spectacle. The wheel's spin, the elegant croupiers, and the dramatic reveal of the winning number gave it an edge over card games or dice.

By the late 1700s, roulette tables were fixtures in Parisian gambling dens. It became such a craze that authorities repeatedly banned it, but this only made it more desirable. The wheels kept spinning in the smoky backrooms of cafés and the gilded salons of the elite.

The double-zero wheel remained the standard until two ambitious brothers would change history forever.

Monte Carlo & the Glamorous Boom

In the mid-19th century, François and Louis Blanc revolutionized roulette. They introduced the single-zero wheel, instantly reducing the house edge and making the game far more appealing to players. This small innovation had an enormous impact. Suddenly, roulette wasn’t just another casino game; it was the game.

The Blanc brothers brought their version of roulette to the Casino de Monte-Carlo, which opened in 1863. The timing was perfect: Monaco was reinventing itself as a glamorous playground for Europe’s aristocracy, and roulette became its crown jewel.

Monte Carlo quickly earned its reputation as the roulette capital of the world. Royals, nobles, and celebrities flocked to spin the wheel under glittering chandeliers. The phrase “breaking the bank at Monte Carlo” entered popular culture, referring to players who managed to win so much that the casino’s tables temporarily ran out of chips.

Monte Carlo roulette wasn’t just a game, it was a lifestyle. It symbolised wealth, elegance, and exclusivity. Even today, the roulette image is tied to the glamour of the Riviera, and Monte Carlo remains synonymous with the game.
