What Is Online Poker?

At its core, online poker is simply poker played over the internet. However, there are different forms depending on whether you’re playing against other players or against the casino (the house).

Basic Rules of Texas Hold’em (The Main Variant)

While there are many poker variants, Texas Hold’em is by far the most popular and is found everywhere online.

The Setup

·     Each player is dealt two hole cards (face down).

·     Five community cards are dealt face up in stages.

·     The goal is to make the best possible five-card hand using any combination of your two hole cards and the five community cards. Selecting good starting hands is crucial to your success, as strong starting hands, especially premium hands like AA, KK, QQ, JJ, TT, AK, and AQ, give you a significant advantage from the outset.

Betting Rounds

·     Pre-Flop: The first betting round occurs after players get their hole cards. Here, you must decide whether to play marginal hands or fold, and whether to call, raise, or even go all in with premium hands. The last bet in this round determines the final action before the flop is revealed.

·     The Flop: Three community cards are revealed, followed by betting. Again, players must evaluate their hand strength and decide if their hand is strong enough to continue, or if they should fold marginal hands.

·     The Turn: A fourth community card is dealt, followed by betting. Players may commit more chips with a strong hand to maximize value or attempt to bluff.

·     The River: The fifth and final community card is dealt, followed by betting. The last bet in this round is the final opportunity to act before the showdown.

·     Showdown: If multiple players remain, everyone reveals their cards, and the best hand wins. Sometimes, a player can win with just ace high if no one has made a pair or better. The winning hand is the best combination at showdown, and the player with the best hand will win the pot, collecting all the chips wagered during the hand.

Hand Rankings (Strongest to Weakest)

·     Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 all of the same suit.

·     Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit.

·     Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank.

·     Full House: Three of a kind + a pair.

·     Flush: Any five cards of the same suit.

·     Straight: Five consecutive cards of any suit.
